His sense of humour

If one day, eleven years ago, we had said to Léo: “We’re going to get together to pay tribute to you”, he would have grumbled and called us idiots. And then, because he was modest, he would have turned it into a joke and told us about one of his funny adventures.

I would like to pay tribute to his humour. I will tell you about an episode that happened to me with him. It was at the beginning of the 1970s, some of you will remember, the France 3 Bretagne television transmitter tower had been blown up in Brittany. Some time later I met Léo at the Palais de Justice in Paris and I saw his look of mischief and laughter when something funny happened to him. I said to him, “You look very happy”. He replied “yes, I’ve just come back from the State Security Court”. I was surprised because it was not the kind of place where people had fun… I asked him what he had done there that was so funny. He replies “You don’t know? I was pleading for a Jewish Breton autonomist”.
